What would happen if a gigantic shark ended up in the Seine River in Paris? That's the naive notion that the recently released action picture on Netflix shamelessly explores.
Under Paris is the kind of junk "content" that Netflix tends to only make for women, more in the vein of the ridiculous Snakes on a Plane than the actually exciting Jaws; this time, though, it's aimed directly at teenage lads. It's not that ladies can't enjoy the gory delights of this film, but they would be better off watching Emily in Paris instead, along with everyone else on the planet. Imagine Oscar-nominated Bérénice Bejo racing against time to neutralize a rogue shark that has been spotted swimming—you guessed it—under Paris, while Emily is contentedly nibbling on a croissant in the corner of the shot. In the movie's prologue, Bejo plays Sophia, a marine biologist who gets into trouble when she meets a deadly shark that seems to be growing at an incredibly fast pace. The shark strikes Sophia and her group, which includes her husband, and in a gruesome scenario that hardly passes for real-life filmmaking, they all end up dead. Sophia, though, lives to lament for another day. Thus, three years later, when the same shark washes up on the banks of the Seine, Sophia has to set aside her personal grievances and make sure the shark is returned to the water — because how foolish would that be?
In addition, she has an impending triathlon that the mayor of the town would not postpone until the shark is gone, so she has to swim against the tide and cross the river. If this is a critique of French politics today, director Xavier Gens deserves a pat on the back. The film Under Paris is essentially about a working-class hero. Along with a group of environmentalists who had been following the shark's activities for some time and were the first to alert Sophia to its presence, local police officers also accompany Sophia. Although they operate out of a covert location suited for the Knights Templar, they go by the simple name Save the Seas Organization.

Speaking of the Knights, in the third act the film decides to unveil a story twist so outrageous that it would be illegal to reveal it without warning. Let's just state that there is a factor in flawless conception. Furthermore, this is only a preview of the completely absurd conclusion, which not only establishes a sequel but also suggests that it would be in a completely other genre. You wouldn't know a difference if Netflix released five of these films over the course of the next five years.
It probably didn't cost that much to make this one. Under Paris is almost entirely cartoonish, despite the fact that a good chunk of it was shot on location, which is always commendable these days. This is notably the case for a few pivotal sequences near the beginning and close of the film. Under Paris is, after all, directed by the guy who brought us the New French Extremity classic Frontier(s), so there's no denying that there's a lot of bloodshed, but the shoddy CGI makes it difficult to take any of the carnage seriously. A part of you wonders how much more enjoyable this film would have been if one of the characters had been astute enough to wink at the camera. Nonetheless, even in the film's pivotal action scene, which takes place in the well-known catacombs of the city, Gens and his writing team take it extremely seriously.
